Big-time college sports = modern tribal religion
Big-time sports have become a modern tribal religion for college students. There are sacred symbols (team logos), a high priest (Coach K) and shared rituals (chants and face painting).
Yes, sometimes it seems as if the church is the only place not supposed to have rituals and traditions. I think rituals and traditions are part of what make us human. We lose something inside of ourselves when we lose that. And we make it up in other ways. We invent rituals when robbed of them in church. Superbowl Sunday is the highest, holiest day in the year now!

Yet, when it comes to church all this stuff, sacred symbols, a pastor, and ritual, are bad.
